“Safety has been a driving force for the whole industry in recent years” commented Günther Unterhauser, Senior VP Sales & Marketing, Bridgestone Europe, after presenting the award.“Bridgestone is delighted to sponsor the Best Safety Innovation award and, in so doing, support a young designer with a heart for safety.” Organised by the automobile design magazine Interior Motives, the annual awards promote the importance of innovation in vehicle design by challenging design students from around the world to make their mark on future car design.Winners are rewarded with cash prizes and the chance to receive recognition from top figures in the international automotive design community. The 2006 awards, which attracted more than 650 students from leading institutions in 68 countries, included a safety innovation category for the first time. Its sponsorship is a natural fit for Bridgestone’s focus on road safety and support for the target of decreasing the number of traffic casualties and fatalities on European roads. |

Initiatives such as the “Think before you drive” and “Make roads safe” safety campaigns both in co-operation with the FIA Foundation as well as the recently obtained European Road Safety Charter from the European Commission, clearly underline the company’s commitment. “Bridgestone feels strongly that primary safety offers great potential to save lives, so it is encouraging that young designers are thinking along similar lines” concluded Mr Unterhauser.
